GetUThere Driving School – Child Safe Standards Policy (Queensland)

1. Purpose of This Policy

GetUThere Driving School is committed to providing a safe, supportive, and respectful learning environment for all students, including children and young people under 18. This policy outlines how we meet Queensland’s Child Safe Standards, Blue Card requirements, and TMR safety expectations.

2. Scope

       This policy applies to:

  • All driving instructors

  • Administrative staff

  • Contractors and volunteers

  • Any person engaged by GetUThere Driving School who interacts with students

       It covers all lesson environments, including in‑car training, test-day support, online communication, and parent/guardian interactions.

3. Legal & Regulatory Framework

       GetUThere Driving School complies with:

  • Working with Children (Risk Management and Screening) Act 2000 (Qld)

  • Child Protection Act 1999 (Qld)

  • Queensland Child Safe Standards

  • Transport & Main Roads (TMR) Driver Training Industry Requirements

  • Australian Child Safe Principles

  • Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and Australian Privacy Principles

4. Commitment to Child Safety

       GetUThere Driving School:

  • Prioritises the safety, wellbeing, and empowerment of all children

  • Has zero tolerance for child abuse, grooming, or exploitation

  • Ensures all staff act in the best interests of the child

  • Encourages children to speak up if they feel unsafe

  • Ensures parents/guardians are informed and involved where appropriate

5. Blue Card & Instructor Screening Requirements

       All instructors and relevant staff must:

  • Hold a current Blue Card or exemption card

  • Maintain ongoing eligibility under the Blue Card system

  • Immediately report any change in police information

  • Complete annual child safety training

       GetUThere Driving School maintains a Blue Card Register and verifies all cards before work begins.

6. Code of Conduct for Working With Children

All instructors must follow these standards:

Professional Behaviour

  • Treat all students with respect, patience, and courtesy

  • Maintain professional boundaries at all times

  • Avoid any behaviour that could be misinterpreted as grooming

Lesson Environment

  • Lessons must occur in public view (e.g., not in isolated areas)

  • Vehicles must remain clean, safe, and appropriate

  • Instructors must not use inappropriate language or topics

Communication

  • Communication with minors must be professional, lesson‑related, and transparent

  • No private messaging outside approved channels

  • No social media contact with students

Physical Contact

  • Physical contact is avoided unless necessary for safety

  • Any required contact must be explained and appropriate

7. Parent & Guardian Engagement

       GetUThere Driving School:

  • Encourages parents/guardians to attend pre‑lesson briefings

  • Provides clear information about lesson plans and progress

  • Ensures parents/guardians can raise concerns at any time

8. Child Participation & Empowerment

      We support children to:

  • Ask questions

  • Express concerns

  • Request breaks

  • Decline activities that make them uncomfortable (unless unsafe)

Instructors must listen respectfully and respond appropriately.

9. Managing Risks to Children

       We maintain a Child Risk Management Strategy that includes:

  • Annual risk assessments

  • Instructor training

  • Incident reporting procedures

  • Safe lesson planning

  • Monitoring of communication channels

10. Reporting Concerns, Misconduct, or Harm

       All staff must report:

  • Suspected child abuse

  • Grooming behaviour

  • Inappropriate conduct

  • Safety concerns

  • Breaches of this policy 

Internal Reporting

       Concerns must be reported to the GetUThere Driving School Child Safety Officer (CSO) immediately. 

External Reporting (Mandatory)

       Depending on the situation, reports may be made to:

  • Queensland Police Service (QPS)

  • Child Safety Services

  • Blue Card Services

  • TMR (if instructor accreditation is affected)

Children and parents are encouraged to report concerns without fear of retaliation.

11. Record Keeping & Privacy

      We securely store:

  • Incident reports

  • Blue Card records

  • Training records

  • Communication logs

       All personal information is handled in accordance with the Australian Privacy Principles.

12. Staff Training & Continuous Improvement

       All staff must complete:

  • Annual child safety training

  • Blue Card compliance training

  • TMR safety and conduct training

  • Mandatory reporting training

The policy is reviewed annually or after any incident.

13. Policy Review & Updates

       This policy is reviewed every 12 months or when:

  • Legislation changes

  • TMR updates requirements

  • New risks are identified

  • Feedback from children or families suggests improvements
